A compact, lightweighted and weather-resistant telephoto zoom lens for use with 35mm-format full-frame digital SLR providing great poratability


Despite its compact, lightweight design weighing approximately 819 grams, this zoom lens covers the image circle of 35mm full-frame digital SLRs, and provides a focal length range of 70mm to 210mm to facilitate handheld outdoor photography. When mounted on an APS-C-format camera, its focal length range is extended to the equivalent of 107mm to 322mm in the 35mm format. Coupled with its compact, lightweight body, it can be easily integrated in any APS-C-format camera system.
The lens which allows the photographer to enjoy active field photography in a wide range of outdoor applications, including scenic photography, townscape shooting, sports events and wildlife photography where its outstanding portability really comes in handy.
Use of the high-grade, multi-layer HD Coating to the optics optimizes the overall lens coating performance, while assuring edge-to-edge sharpness and minimizing flare and ghost images in backlit situations. Thanks to a minimum focusing distance of 0.95 meters and a maximum magnification of 0.32 times, it provides a photographic coverage much wider than that of previous models.

Technologies supporting exceptional imaging performance

The lens construction, with a total of 20 elements in 14 groups, includes three ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements and two anomalous dispersion glass elements. This reduces distortion, coma and chromatic aberration are compensated for and the conditions for highcontrast images with high resolution and sharpness all the way to the edge of the image. Thanks to internal focusing, the length of the lens barrel remains constant, which this makes handling much easier in many shooting situations.
This lens incorporates a Round-shaped, nine-blade diaphragm to produce a natural, beautiful bokeh (defocus) effect while minimizing the streaking effect of point light sources.


HD Coating to enhance imaging performance

The lens incorporates the PENTAX-developed, multi-layer HD (High Definition) Coating. Compared with conventional multi-layer coatings, it improves light transmittance while reducing average reflectance in the visible ray spectrum. This means that it can deliver clear, well-defined images with minimal flare and ghost images, even under demanding lighting conditions such as backlighting.


Minimum focusing distance of 0.95 meter

This lens can be used as a tele-macro lens as the minimum focusing distance of 0.95 meter has been achieved for both the tele and wide, with the maximum magnification, 0.32x. By using with APS-C the maximum magnification is 0.48x

Weather-resistant construction

This lens features a dependable weather-resistant construction with special sealings to effectively prevent the intrusion of water into the lens interior. By pairing it with a weather-resistant PENTAX digital SLR camera body, it assures a durable, dependable digital imaging system that performs superbly in demanding shooting settings even in rain or mist, or in locations prone to water splashing or spray.

SP Coating
SP coating is a PENTAX-original special coating that provides superior performance in repelling water and oils. It is used on the front surface of the first high-performance lens for effective protection of the lens surface. This coating not only prevents adhesion of dust, water drops, oils, and other substances, but it also makes it easy to wipe off objects that adhere to the lens.

Supersonic AF motor (SDM)

Thanks to the incorporation of the PENTAX-original SDM autofocus system driven by a built-in supersonic motor, this zoom lens offers exceptionally smooth and quiet autofocus operation.
When mounted on an SDM-compatible PENTAX K-mount lens-interchangeable digital camera body*, the focus mode is automatically switched to SDM-assisted autofocusing to ensure dependable, flawless AF operation. 

* This lens is compatible with the K-3 Mark III, K-3II, K-3, K-5 II, K-5 II s, K-30, K-01, K-5, K-r, K-7, K-x, K-m, K20D, K200D, K100D Super and K10D camera bodies (with Ver. 1.30 or later firmware installed).
When mounted on other camera bodies, the focus mode is automatically switched to manual.

Quick-Shift Focus System

After focusing using the autofocus, the focus ring can be turned to allow immediate focus adjustment using the manual focus.
This feature enables smooth operability by eliminating the need for an AF/MF switching operation. This is useful during closeup photography, for instance, when you want to shoot while mak-ing fine adjustments to the focus


Lens Hood included

In addition to a variety of features, such as our unique multi-coating and the prevention of reflections in the lens barrel, a large special lens hood is included with this PENTAX lens to minimise ghosting and flare that occurs in backlit and other adverse conditions. As such, the lens hood is an integral part of the optical system and should always be used when using the lens. Most PENTAX lenses are designed so that the lens tip does not rotate when zooming and focusing to facilitate the use of circular polarising filters. This is further supported by a small window in the lower part of the aperture to allow the circular polarising filter to be operated.

PENTAX K Mount

The lens mounts for PENTAX interchangeable lenses are based on the bayonet K mount, which has remained unchanged since its inception in 1975. It is a mount unique to PENTAX that features a large aperture combined with superior ease of replacement, accuracy, and toughness. These features are utilized to comfortably incorporate an iris control mechanism, autofocus mechanism, and other functions for enabling nearly complete compatibility with conventional lenses. The PENTAX K Mount keeps its advanced versatility despite differences in camera and lens functions.

The power of portable quality

"I initially bought it as a lightweight alternative to the excellent 70–200, but I ended up using it on its own, not just because of its weight. Although considered slightly less sharp, I am often surprised by its results, especially given its versatility. To the point that I sometimes “forget” the heavy artillery in my bag. Always ready when needed. I have captured some excellent action shots with it. I would prefer the zoom ring to be closer to the body, as I occasionally confuse it with the focus ring."
