This standard lens has a 43mm focal length, which is equal to the diagonal length of a 35mm-film image area. Its unique focal length captures the image as if seen by the human eye, and produces a natural sense of depth as observed by the naked eye.

Compared with conventional 50mm standard lenses, which were popular during the golden days of film photography, this 43mm lens provides a slightly broader field of view to more effectively capture today’s subjects — such as high-rise buildings, wide streets and fashionable cityscapes.

To optimize “sensibility” — one of the main design concepts of the Limited series — PENTAX paid the utmost attention even to the details that can’t simply be measured in numerical terms, to improve the imaging power of this new lens. Newly applied to the first optical element, the SP coating improves the water/grease-repellent and scratch-resistant performance, while enhancing ease of maintenance.

Machined aluminum lens barrel to optimize the texture of the material

Every lens barrel and all exterior components of the PENTAX Limited-series lenses are meticulously machined from high-grade aluminum material to optimize the high-quality visual design and the feel when the photographer touches them.
Their elegant shape and distinctive appearance are still loved by many camera enthusiasts today, even as the format of most camera bodies has shifted from analogue to digital.

Exclusively designed lens hoods and slip-on caps to match the character of individual lenses

Each lens hood is shaped differently to optimize the optical performance of the individual lens. Electrostatic flocking has been applied to the inside of the lens hood to minimize internal reflection, and also to attract dust particles and prevent them from sticking to the front surface of the lens.

Under today’s standards, large-aperture lenses are expected to be so heavy and bulky because designers try to optimize resolving power and contrast while minimizing various aberrations. With FA Limited-series lenses, however, PENTAX has succeeded in achieving these two contradicting goals simultaneously, by making them compact and easy-to-handle through effective control of aberrations, while optimizing the sense of depth and sharpness in resulting images. Because these lenses deliver image descriptions that truthfully convey the ambience of the image, and also provide the flexibility to change the visual expression with different aperture settings, they are still greatly appreciated by many photographers as truly special lenses.

HD Coating to enhance imaging performance

In addition to the acclaimed optical performance of the smc PENTAX-FA 43mm F1.9 Limited — a best-seller for more than 20 years since its market launch — this lens newly features the PENTAX-original HD coating to deliver crisp, well-defined images even under demanding conditions.

The lens incorporates the PENTAX-developed, multi-layer HD (High Definition) Coating. Compared with conventional multi-layer coatings, it improves light transmittance while reducing average reflectance in the visible ray spectrum. This means that it can deliver clear, well-defined images with minimal flare and ghost images, even under demanding lighting conditions such as backlighting.

SP Coating

SP coating is a PENTAX-original special coating that provides superior performance in repelling water and oils. It is used on the front surface of the first high-performance lens for effective protection of the lens surface. This coating not only prevents adhesion of dust, water drops, oils, and other substances, but it also makes it easy to wipe off objects that adhere to the lens.

PENTAX K Mount

The lens mounts for PENTAX interchangeable lenses are based on the bayonet K mount, which has remained unchanged since its inception in 1975. It is a mount unique to PENTAX that features a large aperture combined with superior ease of replacement, accuracy, and toughness. These features are utilized to comfortably incorporate an iris control mechanism, autofocus mechanism, and other functions for enabling nearly complete compatibility with conventional lenses. The PENTAX K Mount keeps its advanced versatility despite differences in camera and lens functions.

In addition, this lens is equipped with an aperture ring, which means that it can also be used on older cameras without electronic aperture control without any restrictions.

Good but not perfect !!!

"The lens is soft below f4. Corners and margins are soft even above f4. No weather sealing. Pentax needs to work on this lens to improve ittechnically. Other than that it is a nice piece of equipment keeping in view that it was manufactured way back. . . I also understand it was made not just for sharpness but something else . . . portability and unique rendering. . Personally i prefer fuji 35mm f2 and 50mm f2 lenses which are far superior in every aspect. . . ."

"Im very casual amateur about photography, but the lens is very compact and just pleasure to use on K1ii and most importantly wife's loving the family photos ive taken with it, so im one content buyer. If i really had to find some negatives, id wish it could be WR, silent drive (non-screw) and have quickfocus . . . but as this is couple decades old classic design, it find it wrong to fault it for lacking them. Still if there will be future version of the lens in future, those would be on my wish list."
