Sensor Technology

25.73 megapixel BSI sensor with top light sensitivity of ISO 1,600,000

A BSI-sensor is being installed in the PENTAX K-3 Mark III for the first time. This back-illuminated sensor, with an effective resolution of approx. 25.73 megapixels, works in conjunction with the new PRIME V imaging engine and the newly designed accelerator unit to deliver exceptionally high image quality. By also eliminating the need for an AA (anti-aliasing) optical filter, the camera produces super-high-resolution, sharp images.

The design not only expands the dynamic range, but also minimises noise, even in the low and super-high ranges. Thanks to significantly improved noise reduction, the PENTAX K-3 Mark III offers a super-high maximum light sensitivity of ISO 1,600,000.

In-body Shake Reduction II system (IBIS) with various functions
The IBIS sensor offers exposure security of up to 5.5 EV and compensates for blurring on 5 axes. The movable sensor is also used for the pixel shift function to expand the resolution, which can now be used with the Pentax K-3 Mark III without a tripod.

In addition, the movable sensor unit is used to simulate a low-pass filter. By eliminating the AA (Anti Aliasing) filter, a higher image sharpness is achieved, and to avoid any moiré effect that may occur, the sensor unit is set into micro-vibrations.
At the same time, it can be used as a sensor shift for autohorizon correction or for cleaning the sensor with the DR II (Dust Removal).

Pixel Shift Resolution System

By taking advantage of the SR II mechanism, this innovative system captures four images of the same scene, with the sensor being shifted one pixel up, down, left and right each time, from which the camera then calculates a single image that can be saved as a JPEG or RAW file. This technique makes full use of the 25.73 megapixels for the image file, resulting in significantly higher sharpness and colour reproduction as well as lower image noise.

Optical viewfinder with approx. 100% field of view and approx. 1.05x magnification

The PENTAX K-3 Mark III is designed in the traditional SLR format, in which an optical viewfinder plays an important role. To this end, it features a high-performance viewfinder with a high-refraction glass pentaprism that offers approx. 1.05x magnification with a field of view of almost 100%. This ensures that the camera does not provide an electronically influenced viewfinder image in a size that is unique even across classes.
The unique experience of the recording process is underpinned by the design of the viewfinder and the diverse data displayed in the transparent LCD viewfinder display.

The user interface design allows you to intuitively adjust the camera settings without taking your eyes off the viewfinder. To enhance ease of use and thus the shooting experience, you can programme the desired combination of display data, such as grid patterns and AF focus points, according to your requirements.

Ergonomic design for responsive camera operation

A photographer must feel comfortable with the camera, and this starts with the ergonomics of the body. The grip and the layout of the control buttons on the very compact PENTAX K-3 Mark III have been optimised for different hand sizes and finger lengths.

Image to render

In addition, a great deal of emphasis has been placed on the user interface. In the style of the classic Pentax analogue cameras, the camera can be operated directly, without the often laborious process of using camera menus.

Smart Functions

An important part of this are PENTAX's own Smart Functions, which now allow five functions to be pre-programmed from 22 options, so that they are always available at a moment's notice.

Image to render

To perfect the photography experience, many controls can be customised, making each camera a truly individual tool.

Hyper Operation System

Another essential part is the unique Hyper Operation System of the new generation. For exposure control, it not only allows you to switch instantly between programme automatic (P) to aperture (Av) or shutter speed (Tv), but now also to switch immediately to TAv mode (shutter/aperture priority) or manual mode, with the ISO being set automatically.

Image to render

STANDARD
By turning the front/rear electronic dial, you can instantly switch the AE mode from P to Tv or Av.
Also, by providing single-action switching between Tv and Av, this mode assures intuitive operation in capturing an image, by emphasizing the subject’s motion, or the depth of field of the scene.

ADVANCED
This new mode not only provides speedy switching between Tv and Av, but also features instant shift to the TAv (Shutter/Aperture-priority) mode simply by changing the shutter-speed and aperture settings.
Also, by changing the ISO sensitivity setting, you can flawlessly shift to the M (Manual) mode, harmonizing the easy photo-shooting of Programmed AE operation with the flexible exposure control of manual operation.

PENTAX real-time scene analysis system

This system, developed by PENTAX, performs a thorough analysis of the subject, taking into account fac-tors such as the brightness distribution across the image field, the shape, colour and movement of the subject. The new RGBIr AE sensor with approx. 307,000 pixels, which captures the subject in even greater detail than before, in conjunction with the state-of-the-art image processing engine, enables accurate de-tection of the subject's face and eyes when shooting with the viewfinder, as well as highly precise tracking of moving subjects. In combination with an image recognition system based on deep learning technology, it ensures highly reliable exposure control, automatic selection of the optimal focus point and reliable white balance.

Custom Image

With another nod to photography with different films, the PENTAX K-3 Mark III is equipped with the ‘Custom Image’ function. Just as you would have done in the analogue era, you select a suitable preset for the desired image characteristic, as with the earlier film selection. In addition to presets for landscape, portraits, black and white or slides, a total of 13 recipes are available, all of which can be further refined.
In addition, there are also functions for improved reproduction of, for example, sunsets (CTE), skin tones or improved sharpness, as well as numerous filter functions to provide the photographer with exactly the image that he remembers later when viewing.

Detailed Information about Custom Image, please find here...

Magnesium alloy for all surfaces

The camera's design and range of functions make it ideal for a wide range of applications. Reliability and stability play an important role in this.
The top, bottom, front and back of the PENTAX K-3 Mark III are made of magnesium alloy. This lightweight, high-strength material not only protects the camera's internal mechanisms from shocks and vibrations, but also gives it the appearance of a solid, high-quality camera body. At the same time, the PENTAX K-3 Mark III has a solid dust and weather protection. When used with the matching lenses from the WR or AW series and the optionally available battery grip D-BG8, the ingress of dust and water is prevented to provide a highly airtight imaging system that ensures reliable performance even in adverse weather conditions.

Interesting accessory options

In addition to the optionally available Astrotracer for simple astrophotography, the camera can be connected to a smartphone via the free ‘Image Sync’ app, which allows you to use a variety of Wi-Fi functions. These features make storing and using captured images easier and more flexible. This application also allows for remote control of camera functions.

Highly durable shutter unit

In addition to the housing design, an especially robust shutter unit ensures reliable and long-term photographic enjoyment. According to in-house tests, the shutter unit can withstand at least 300,000 releases at a speed of 12 frames per second, thus contributing to an improvement in the continuous shooting speed and an increase in the number of recordable images.
