PENTAX-D FA MACRO 100mmF2.8ED AW - A macro lens for use with PENTAX digital SLR cameras, featuring a new optical design for greatly improved imaging power

This macro lens has a focal length of 100 mm when used on a PENTAX camera with a 35 mm full-frame sensor, but can also be used on Pentax cameras with an APS-C sensor, in which case it has a focal length of 153 mm, equivalent to the 35 mm format. With this focal length, it takes life-size pictures from a distance of 13 centimetres to the subject. A newly developed optical system with one ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element and two Anomalous Dispersion glass elements has been integrated to minimise unwanted purple fringing. In combination with the high-quality HD (High Definition) coating, it effectively reduces stray light and ghost images across the entire focus range and delivers sharp, high-contrast and clearly defined images. The circular aperture also creates a beautiful bokeh (blur) effect in the background. The compact, lightweight body features an airtight AW (All Weather) construction that prevents dust and moisture from entering the interior. With this complete package, it is ideal for many outdoor applications and really comes into its own when photographing living creatures that are not easily startled at a distance, unlike with a shorter focal length.

High-grade aluminum lens barrel and outstanding operability

The lens is stylishly designed, with a lens barrel meticulously machined from high-grade aluminum. It also provides a smooth, comfortable focusing action during manual-focus shooting.

Exceptional imaging performance

The lens features one ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass optical element and two Anomalous Dispersion glass optical elements to minimize the generation of the unwanted purple fringe effect. Coupled with the high-grade HD (High Definition) Coating and the FREE (Fixed Rear Element Extension) focusing system, it effectively reduces the generation of flare and ghost images over the entire focus range — from minimum focusing distance to infinity — and delivers clear, crisp, high-quality images. It also provides life-size images in close-range shooting. Because it assures a greater working distance than a 50mm macro lens, it is very effective in the shooting of unapproachable subjects.

HD Coating to enhance imaging performance

The lens incorporates the PENTAX-developed, multi-layer HD (High Definition) Coating. Compared with conventional multi-layer coatings, it improves light transmittance while reducing average reflectance in the visible ray spectrum. This means that it can deliver clear, well-defined images with minimal flare and ghost images, even under demanding lighting conditions such as backlighting.

Designed for challenging conditions

Dustproof, weather-resistant AW construction

This is the first macro lens to feature dustproof, weather-resistant AW (All Weather) construction to prevent the intrusion of dust and moisture into its interior, using six sealing parts to optimize the airtight performance. When mounted on a dustproof, weather-resistant PENTAX digital SLR camera body, it creates a highly dependable, durable imaging system that performs superbly in demanding shooting settings — even in rain or mist, or at locations prone to splashing or spraying water.

SP Coating

The front optical element has been treated with SP (Super Protect) Coating to keep the front surface free of dust or stains, improving imaging performance and reliability in outdoor settings.

Lens Hood included

In addition to a variety of features, such as our unique multi-coating and the prevention of reflections in the lens barrel, a large special lens hood is included with this PENTAX lens to minimise ghosting and flare that occurs in backlit and other adverse conditions. As such, the lens hood is an integral part of the optical system and should always be used when using the lens.

Others

Quick-Shift Focus System

This innovative focus system allows the photographer to instantly shift the focus mode from auto to manu-al: all that is needed is a single rotation of the focus ring after the subject has been captured in focus by the camera’s autofocus system. This single-action operation eliminates the need for a troublesome, multi-step focus-mode switching maneuver during fast-action outdoor shooting

Rounded diaphragm to produce a beautiful bokeh effect

Featuring a rounded diaphragm from open aperture to F5.6, the lens produces a natural, beautiful bokeh (defocus) effect while minimizing the streaking effect of point light sources.

MTF chart information

MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) is a kind of index used to evaluate lens performance, which represents the extent of subject contrast reproduction as spatial frequency.
The MTF chart here shows the contrast on the vertical axis, and distance from the center of the image on the horizontal axis. For the spatial frequency, 10 lines/mm shows a low frequency, and 30 lines/mm shows a high frequency, resulting in the MTF graph. On the graph, the solid line represents the S direction (sagittal direction and radiation direction) MTF, and the broken line represents the M direction (meridional direction and concentric circular direction) MTF.
In general, a low-frequency MTF is proof of a clear, high-contrast lens, and a high-frequency MTF is proof of a sharp lens with high resolving power.

PENTAX K Mount

The lens mounts for PENTAX interchangeable lenses are based on the bayonet K mount, which has remained unchanged since its inception in 1975. It is a mount unique to PENTAX that features a large aperture combined with superior ease of replacement, accuracy, and toughness. These features are utilized to comfortably incorporate an iris control mechanism, autofocus mechanism, and other functions for enabling nearly complete compatibility with conventional lenses. The PENTAX K Mount keeps its advanced versatility despite differences in camera and lens functions.
