This high-performance, interchangeable standard zoom lens for use with PENTAX K-mount digital SLR cameras, providing exceptional imaging power and a large F2.8 maximum aperture. This zoom lens with an universal focal length range of 24-70 mm is a perfect standard zoom lens and the perfect addition to the HD PENTAX-D FA 70-210mm F4 ED SDM WR and HD PENTAX-D FA* 70-200mm F2.8ED DC AW telephoto zoom lenses.

The maximum aperture of 2.8 over the entire zoom range to deliver brilliant image quality and many other first-class features meet the highest standards – and are already aligned with the high technical requirements of future PENTAX cameras.

When mounted on a 35mm-format full-frame digital SLR camera body, this zoom lens offers a zoom ratio of approximately 2.9 times to cover the ultra-wide-angle to standard ranges (24mm to 70mm in focal length). It not only covers the focal-length range most frequently used for ordinary subjects, but also provides ultra-wide-angle coverage to produce distinctive visual expressions, such as exaggerated perspectives or extra-wide depths of field, making it very useful with subjects such as sweeping landscapes and shallow in-door scenes.
When mounted on a current K-series digital SLR camera body with APS-C size sensor, it provides focal lengths from 37mm to 107mm in the 35mm format to cover wide-angle to medium-telephoto ranges.

Since its large maximum aperture not only creates an excellent bokeh (defocus) effect on the background for beautiful portraits, but also allows the photographer to handhold the camera for poorly illuminated subjects, such as sunsets and indoor scenes.

Exceptional imaging power

Consisting of 17 elements in 12 groups, the newly designed optics feature three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) optical elements, one anomalous-dispersion-glass aspherical optical element and three aspherical optical elements to accommodate super-high-resolution image sensors. By assuring sufficient light levels even at the edges of the image field and compensating various aberrations to a minimum.
It provides a high MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) and delivers well-illustrated, fine-detailed images that are rich in contrast and resolution across the entire image field. When mounted on a current PENTAX K-series camera body, it uses only the central area of the image circle so that it delivers high-resolution images with uniform image description over the entire image field.

HD coating to improve image quality

The lens is equipped with PENTAX's original multi-layer HD (High Definition) coating. Compared to conventional multi-layer coatings, it improves light transmission while reducing average reflectance in the visible spectrum. This means it delivers clear, well-defined images with minimal flare and ghosting, even in challenging lighting conditions such as backlight.

Weather-resistant construction

This lens features a dependable weather-resistant construction with special sealings to effectively prevent the intrusion of water into the lens interior. By pairing it with a weather-resistant PENTAX digital SLR camera body, it assures a durable, dependable digital imaging system that performs superbly in demanding shooting settings even in rain or mist, or in locations prone to water splashing or spray.

Supersonic AF motor (SDM)

Thanks to the incorporation of the PENTAX-original SDM autofocus system driven by a built-in supersonic motor, this zoom lens offers exceptionally smooth and quiet autofocus operation.
When mounted on an SDM-compatible PENTAX K-mount lens-interchangeable digital camera body*, the focus mode is automatically switched to SDM-assisted autofocusing to ensure dependable, flawless AF operation. 

* This lens is compatible with the K-3 Mark III, K-3II, K-3, K-5 II, K-5 II s, K-30, K-01, K-5, K-r, K-7, K-x, K-m, K20D, K200D, K100D Super and K10D camera bodies (with Ver. 1.30 or later firmware installed).
When mounted on other camera bodies, the focus mode is automatically switched to manual.

Lens Hood  included

In addition to a variety of features, such as our unique multi-coating and the prevention of reflections in the lens barrel, a large special lens hood is included with this PENTAX lens to minimise ghosting and flare that occurs in backlit and other adverse conditions. As such, the lens hood is an integralpart of the optical system and should always be used when using the lens. Most PENTAX lenses are designed so that the lens tip does not rotate when zoomingand focusing to facilitate the use of circular polarising filters. This isfurther supported by a small window in the lower part of the aperture to allowthe circular polarising filter to be operated.

Quick-Shift Focus system
After focusing using the autofocus, the focus ring can be turned to allow immediate focus adjustment using the manual focus.This feature enables smooth operability by eliminating the need for an AF/MF switching operation. This is useful during closeup photography, for instance, when you want to shoot while making fine adjustments to the focus.

MTF chart information

MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) is a kind of index used to evaluate lens performance, which represents the extent of subject contrast reproduction as spatial frequency.
The MTF chart here shows the contrast on the vertical axis, and distance from the center of the image on the horizontal axis. For the spatial frequency, 10 lines/mm shows a low frequency, and 30 lines/mm shows a high frequency, resulting in the MTF graph. On the graph, the solid line represents the S direction (sagittal direction and radiation direction) MTF, and the broken line represents the M direction (meridional direction and concentric circular direction) MTF.
In general, a low-frequency MTF is proof of a clear, high-contrast lens, and a high-frequency MTF is proof of a sharp lens with high resolving power.
